The Kitten That Fell From The Sky!

This could almost be a story in itself. No, it’s not about writing, but it’s one of these events in life that make you happy that you took action on the day they happened. One month ago, while walking to the mailbox to retrieve the day’s mail, I noticed a pack of huge flies gathered around some tiny thing wriggling on the ground. At first I thought it was a half-dead mouse, but looking closer, it turned out to be a kitten, a very young one—one day old at the most, and I somehow doubt it, she probably couldn’t have spent a whole night outside already. She was still wet from birth fluids, and pretty much trying to get away from the flies around her.

Now, I’m not a cat person, and we already have a dog who’s quite frightened of anything “new” at home, so I knew I couldn’t keep her. However, I also couldn’t just leave her there on the pavement, so I took her at my mother-in-law’s, to at least get some milk for young pets at her pharmacy. We spent a good half of the afternoon feeding the kitten, keeping her warm and looking for someone who could take care of her. Looks like this was a lucky day for the newborn one, since before the evening, friends accepted to take her in. They love cats, they have experience with feeding and taking care of such young kittens, and they have a couple of cats themselves. There are worse environments than this.

Yesterday, said friends gave me a few pictures they had taken of her, and here’s one. She’s 3-weeks old on it, and pretty much alert, big and in advance for her age—she opened her eyes at 10 days already. Their dog loves her, too, even acting as some kind of fatherly figure, could I say. An employee at the pharmacy had said she wouldn’t survive more than a few days. She was definitely wrong. This little one is a survivor.

And what does all of this have to do with writing (my beloved topic on this blog), one may ask? Nothing. I just felt like sharing.

I’m so glad you shared this. With so many “bad” stories hitting the news on a daily basis, it’s a delight to read a “good” story. A beautiful story even.

That kitten is gorgeous and I wanted to say thank you for caring enough to do something to help it. She certainly is a lucky little thing.

Yes, I’m happy I took her in on that day, and didn’t let her on the pavement. I never managed to find the mother, though; we supposed that maybe she had abandoned the kitten, but given her age, the mother herself probably wouldn’t have gone very far with the newborns… So either someone’s cat had kittens and they abandoned them here and there, or the mother gave birth and died somewhere in the bushes (lots of thick bushes here; impossible to go under them to look, unless I cut them up completely).

In any case, after having found her, there was no way I could’ve gone home without looking back and leaving her behind.

That’s a wonderful story. I have a soft spot for animals and I hate seeing them suffer in any way. Thanks for sharing!
