Wondering about Webhosts

Yzabel / September 6, 2005

The need to write is constantly growing in me, and I’ve been pondering working on one or two more sites, preferrably blogs. Nothing’s sure yet… simply, ideas are boiling more and more, and I need to let them out somehow. I know I could take some kind of free account at Blog*Spot or similar services, but let’s be honest: I’m used to having “my” hosting and “my” domain names now, and this kind of services usually don’t fit my needs anymore. While I’m very happy with Paradygma (I know, I need to update it!), it’s starting to get a little cramped in there, and I found myself considering other webhosts, more adapted to my needs, preferably not expensive. I’m just hesitant, given that I’ve worked with one host only so far.Preferences include:

  • No setup fee.
  • No “unlimited space/unlimited-unmetered bandwidth for 4$ a month!” ploys. These speak trap to me.
  • A plan that I can pay for monthly to start with; in the case some service proves faulty, I don’t want to be stuck with it for a year.
  • Takes Paypal as well as Visa.
  • 200-500 Mb of storage, 5-10 Gb bandwidth (I really don’t need more).
  • Databases (MySQL) + PHP support. I know how to cram 5 WordPress installs in one database, but I really need one. At least.
  • Free addon domains.
  • Unix/Linux hosting. Cpanel and Fantastico very welcome, but not indispensable.
  • E-mail support as well as phone support.

Any suggestions on hosts I could inquire? So far, I’ve wondered about Asmallorange and Elixant; their starting plans seem interesting. I sure don’t need 1 Gb of webspace nor 40 Gb of bandwidth, and if one day I reach such needs (yeah, right… I can dream), it’ll still be time to change.I’ll be performing comparisons. Right now, I’m simply interested in knowing personal opinions/experiences here, not reviews found on Google (you’re never sure: are they honest reviews, or biased ones written by affiliates of these webhosts?).Thanks in advance!webhosts, webhosting

The hosts I use are http://www.westhost.com and http://www.surpasshosting.com. Both work well but I think Surpass will be more in tune with your needs.I’ve had a really great experience with them anyway. I’d consider moving everything over to them if it wouldn’t be such a pain.Hope that helps!

Hi Yzabel, I use Godaddy.com and haven’t had any problems. They also allow you to install certain addons through them, such as pLog that I use for the blog over on my site.No setup fee, I pay monthly, but they offer a discount for annual services.I’m not an affiliate or anything, though I have thought about looking into some affiliate programs for another blog I’m thinking about setting up.Lee

Thanks for the suggestions! I’m going to note these down and write some little comparison chart later on.
