Review: Child of a Hidden Sea

Summary:

One minute, twenty-four-year-old Sophie Hansa is in a San Francisco alley trying to save the life of the aunt she has never known. The world is Stormwrack, a series of island nations with a variety of cultures and economies—and a language different from any Sophie has heard.

Sophie doesn’t know it yet, but she has just stepped into the middle of a political firestorm, and a conspiracy that could destroy a world she has just discovered… her world, where everyone seems to know who she is, and where she is forbidden to stay.

But Sophie is stubborn, and smart, and refuses to be cast adrift by people who don’t know her and yet wish her gone. With the help of a sister she has never known, and a ship captain who would rather she had never arrived, she must navigate the shoals of the highly charged politics of Stormwrack, and win the right to decide for herself whether she stays in this wondrous world . . . or is doomed to exile.

2.5 stars. This book gave me trouble, although I should’ve liked its setting and themes. When I had to put it down, and then wanted to pick it up again, geting back into the story was a little hard.

I quite liked the world of Stormwrack, which seems fairly rich and complex, full of political intricacies, bureaucracy antics, and red tape tactics. There’s a lot of potential in there, a potential that doubles up with the Fleet—a literal fleet of ships representing every nation, basically a federation existing on sea only, and acting as a central government of sorts. I don’t doubt readers who like stories with a lot of sea travel and exploration will enjoy this side of the novel. A lof of Stormwrack’s system rests on notions such as honour, giving one’s word, having one’s origin speak for their character; this is partly cliché (“the Sylvanners are thieves”, “the Tiladenes are promiscuous”), yet also leaves room for misinterpretation, culture clashes, and having to speak up for oneself, without resorting to family support.

My main problem lay with Sophie. I couldn’t warm up to this character, and thought her rather immature for a 24-year-old woman who’s had experience in “delicate” situations such as diving, which for me implies knowledge and responsibility. While this was part of her character development, I was constantly reminded of what I’m going to call her “tourist mentality”, and in the end, she was still going strong enough about it (obssessed with bringing back samples and pictures, etc.). She first ended up on Stormwrack after saving the life of Gale, a woman who had turned out to be her biological aunt, and that chain of events already hinted at a dangerous world. I could understand Sophie’s desire to go back there and learn more; I had less understanding for the way she did it, ignoring everyone’s recommendations, and involving her brother Bram in the muddle. It felt as if she just didn’t think, only considering the pretty shiny things in the sea, and never the bigger picture and the potential dangers she might put Bram in.

And this very attitude indeed put people in danger, and/or ruined lives. Granted, said people never really explained either how she was such a “threat” to them, not until it was too late, so I don’t blame Sophie for not getting it sooner. However, I do blame her for not thinking it through. For instance, when the bad guys threatened her with magic, demanding she retrieved an item for them, not once did she consider that they may get after other people if she didn’t move fast enough to their liking. Guess what? Someone got kidnapped, and put in harm’s way. The “I have your wife” trope is already tricky enough as it is, since it forces characters to make callous choices (let the loved one die, or let the rest of the world suffer), but when the character herself dive into it head-first, it’s even harder.

Moreover, Sophie had a meandering mind, and after a while, it became distracting (perhaps this was part of the reason why I could never get back into the story easily?). She’d be doing something important to free the aforementioned person, but thinking of the flora and fauna right in the middle of the “mission”. I don’t how it goes for other people; my own mind tend to wander a lot, too; but when something really important pops up, I focus on the task at hand. Maybe I shouldn’t expect characters to react like that, but… I can’t help it. If Mum gets kidnapped, who would be worrying about hiding wasp samples and whatnot inside their skirts? Not me. Similarly, in the beginning, Sophie goes about voicing out whatever goes through her head, when she’s in the middle of an unknown sea, trying not to drown with Gale. Her narrative voice was therefore a little troublesome, although I finally got used to it.

Another problem was how she managed to investigate. As a person thrown in a world whose geopolitical complexities she didn’t know, sometimes she did the math too quickly, more quickly than people who were born and raised on that world. This didn’t strike me as very logical, and made the other characters seem a little dumb. It felt as if they had been dumbed down for the protagonist to show how clever she was, instead of Sophie just being, well, smart. (The connections she made could’ve been made by Verena, who knows Earth technology, and would’ve been just as able, if not more, to connect the dots.)

World-building quibbles of mine:

1) The time travel aspect. It is heavily implied that Stormwrack is future!Earth, but I didn’t see the point. The story would’ve worked just as well if it had been a bona fide other world, and this left me wondering, only to close the book with no more answers about that in the end. Was it really important? Is there going to be a sequel, resting more on this specific matter?

2) The secrecy. Stormwrack people aren’t supposed to know about Erstwhile (Earth), but some of them had the portal magic/technology, and seemingly Gale was acting as courier between both worlds, which also implied that other people from Stormwrack lived in Erstwhile. Why? Who were they? If there’s a post service, it means there’s a need, so how many of them were there? Why the secrecy? As a reader, I don’t want to be told “it’s hush-hush business”: I want to know why it is.

On the other hand, bonus point for deconstructing “the Chosen One/Destroyer of Worlds” trope here.

All in all, an interesting setting, but one I would’ve liked more answers about, just I would’ve liked Sophie to be less of a “tourist”.

NB: ARC version, with a few errors that may be gone by the time the book hits the shelves. (Verena is called “Thorna” a couple of times: a remnant of a former version, or some subtlety I didn’t catch?)

Review: Destruction

Keeping his life together becomes harder when the new children claim to be dark wizards. David believes they use this fantasy to cope with their trauma. Until, David’s wife admits a secret of her own—she is a dark wizard too, as is David, and all of their children.

Now, David must parent two hurting children from a dark world he doesn’t understand and keep his family from falling apart. All while dealing with the realization that everyone he loves, including himself, may be evil.

2.5 stars. Some parts I really enjoyed, but some others were really problematic for me.

All in all, the plot itself is quite a “mundane” one—in that it could be a contemporary novel, without any need for magic in it. For years, David had a mistress, who bore him two children, then vanished from the surface of Earth. Twelve years later, he learns that she’s just died, and he takes custody of his children… without his wife and three other children knowing. On top of all, the kids born out of wedlock were abused by their stepfather. Instant recipe for drama. Just add water.

Now, because sorcery isn’t necessary to such a plot, doesn’t mean I didn’t like it. On the contrary. It lent an interesting spin to this story, because the “destruction” magic theme ran parallel to the destructive path on which the Vandergraff family was set, and opened up a can of questions. What would destroy them: their own nature as wizards and witches, or just their human nature, period? Would things have been the same without magic, would they have gone through the same pitfalls?

The author’s take on magic was one I found intriguing. Wizards/witches’ powers are attuned to seasons, with mages born in summer having the most “positive” magic, spring/autumn being more balanced, and winter mages having to contend with sorcery that always ends up destroying. The latter, as a theme, was bound to get my attention, because it’s something I find fascinating, and along the story, indeed, it appeared to fit my own belief system, so to speak. Winter mages are “doomed”, in that magic amounts to creating consequences, without any control on the causes… and the causes their spells give birth to are of the destructive kind. For instance, a spell meant for someone to “get money” could very well result in “character inherits a lot of money due to spouse dying” (and not by merely winning the lottery, or winning at the races, etc.). On the other hand, destruction-related powers aren’t bad per se: a skilled sorcerer could just as well use them to operate on people and destroy tumors, thus saving lives. I really liked that the magic system in this novel took such things into account, and didn’t only go with “destruction = bad”.

Another thing I liked was that no character was completely black or white. David cheated on his wife and chickened out on too many things (including telling her before picking up Xavier and Evangeline at the orphanage), but he also managed to display some bravery when it came to his family’s safety. Amanda was rightfully outraged, but also had secrets of her own, which didn’t exactly make her a saint. Jude and Emmy are their own shades of fucked-up, Xavier harbours knowledge that could destroy him (while still wanting to protect his sister), Evangeline can’t decide whether she loves her mother, or thinks she “deserved” what happened to her… And so on.

However, a couple of major problems (major for me, at least) prevented me from fully enjoying this novel. First of all, wizards are supposed to be rare (0.001% of the population?), but they keep attracting each other like there’s no tomorrow. This ended up in a cluster of mages gathered in the same place; even friends were wizards/witches. At some point, it became rather unbelievable—and I don’t mean in a general sense: I mean within the context and “rules” of the story.

Second, there were a lot of double standards, and I think I’d have liked to see them challenged some more. David does it, but only weakly. Mostly Amanda annoyed me in that regard, with her holier-than-thou attitude and her tendency to conveniently ignore what she had done, while giving guilt-trips to others. It’s part of the imperfect nature of this character, sure, but almost nobody called her on her bullshit. All right, David cheated on her and had two kids in her back, which is totally crass. But in the early days of their marriage, Amanda was the one who basically decided: “He’s had such a terrible childhood, so let’s erase his memories of that time. Oh, the spell sorta backlashed and he lost some other memories, too. Oops? But David, you’re a cheater and I want a divorce! You’re the bad, bad person here!” I’m aware this is very subjective on my part, but is cheating so much worse than removing someone’s choice, deciding for them, destroying parts of who they were? Of course, it fits perfectly within the scope of destruction magic. I just wish someone, anyone, would have smacked Amanda on the back of the head and told her to look at her own mistakes some more, instead of acting like Perfect Wife And Mother. Double-standards applied to magic as well: most of the “non-practitioners” in the story apparently spent years saying that their magic would have bad consequences and they’d better not practice… but they easily break their “vow”, while constantly blaming others who do the same. (At this point, you can tell that double standards in general annoy the hell out of me. Personal pet peeve here.)

Third, the abuse the kids suffered from: it may be in a second book, but it’s an important matter that I felt wasn’t addressed enough in this first novel. There’s Xavier and Evangeline, of course, but also Samantha, who gets raped by Jude, in Emmy’s room, and Emmy doesn’t say anything until 30 freaking hours have elapsed. The Vandergraffs sure are a dysfunctional family, but this was pushing things too far for a beginning, in my opinion. It looked as if the abuse was a side note, something that just happened, something about which even the victims didn’t care about; while I’m not for victim-mentality, nor for revelling in piles of angst, it nevertheless bothered me.

Fourth: the ending. I felt the same way as I felt with Twilight, i.e. cheated out of a “big finale”. I didn’t really get how Emmy went from what Jude did to “must do [that big thing that is going to be the climax of the story]”, and I definitely would have wanted to see how her that part went—not learning from her afterwards that this and that happened, and that another character saved the day. It was definitely weird and a little bit jarring. So much was already going on within the Vandergraff family, after all.

I think I would be interested in reading the next book, though, even though I didn’t give this one a stellar rating. There’s a lot of potential here when it comes to magic, as well as to redefined dynamics within the family.

Review: California Bones

3.5/4 stars, I can’t exactly decide, but let’s say 4, because I really liked the world depicted in this book.

Somewhere at the end of the 19th century, or in the early 20th century, California cut ties with the rest of the USA. North and South are now separate “kingdoms”, the southern one being giverned for a century by the mysterious Hierarch and his six closest associates. In itself, the back story behind this isn’t extremely developed, but for once, it didn’t matter for me, because the atmosphere permeating fascinated me, and in the end, I found this more important. (I tend to forgive such aspects in fantasy more than I do in dystopian stories, probably because of the magic factor: if there’s magic and supernatural beings, the world isn’t totally our own, and there’s more leeway for alternate history and various changes.)

I must say I loved the magic developed here: consuming bones from a creature allows a sorcerer (called osteomancer) to temporarily gain characteristics from said creature. The more is consumed, the stronger the magic, and some, like the main character, are so permeated with essence from such beings that they can call upon them at will, or almost. There’s something both gross and fascinating in this, similar to what gets my interest in stories where necromancy is concerned. Consuming bones is a large paved way leading straight to cannibalism: why wait until the creature is dead, after all? And, of course, why only consume animals? Readers who don’t like such themes will likely not feel at ease with what happens in this novel. I, well, I kept reading, wanting to know more about how this worked, about how far some people were ready to go.

The setting, the city, felt like a mix of strange glamour and disgusting practices, a combination that usually works for me. People living under delusions fuelled by the glamour magic of an old sorcerer named Disney, whose amusement parks keep visitors half-drugged with false beauty, and are one of society’s backbones. Lively markets full of conmen and thiefs, having to eke a living under the nose of the wealthy ones working for the “government”. Black market, osteomancy being both a tool of power and one that will get you hunted, because you never know when someone more powerful decides it’s time to consume more… substance. Though the descriptions weren’t very long, they were of a kind that made me able to easily picture the streets, the canals, all the places the characters went through, and to me, this world was a vivid one.

The heist itself is of the classic kind, so I’d say it depends on what a reader is looking for here. If one is familiar with such stories and has read a lot, it may not be surprising, and may even appear as predictable. However, if this is the formula one is looking for, for the sheer pleasure of seeing the heist being prepared and carried on, or if one hasn’t read/seen too many stories of that kind, it could be a very different experience.

I really liked this novel, but two caveats, still. First, while it was permeated with that morbid fascination born from osteomancy, I feel it could have been more developed when it came to some aspects. Quite a few times, I realised I wanted to know more, more, more. Some things I could infer, some others I never got an answer to. Second, the story rests on atmosphere, world-builging, and on the heist itself; in comparison, the characters’ motives weren’t always clear, and their personas sometimes seemed simplistic. Again, it probably depends on what one is looking for. I was looking for a heist and a strange kind of magic, not for very deep exploration of every single human psyche involved, but if I had been, I guess I would have liked the novel less than I did.

This is a rich world, in any case, and one that deserves being written about some more. If there’s to be a sequel, I’d definitely pick it.

Review: Hexed

I really can’t say I enjoyed this book. It reads easily, and there were a few good ideas, and a particular twist that was clever (though extremely cruel, too), but mostly I found the characters bland at best, and the plot weighed down by the romance.

The good things:

* Cheerleader-turned-witch. I found this specific idea amusing, because it could have led to a lot of interesting situations. You expect the goth girl to turn witch. But the popular cheerleader, under everyone’s scrutiny, the one for whom the slightest faux-pas looks like committing social suicide? There’s some potential, I say.

* Witchcraft. I like witches. And magic. Simple as that.

* Bishop’s take on life: “Might as well joke, rather than dwell on the bad things and mope.” I like that.

But.

Indigo:

I had absolutely no sympathy for that character. I’d like to say I warmed up to her after a while, but at best, I must’ve felt some vaguely lukewarm sensation, somewhere in that thing people call heart. I found her incredibly self-centred, insensitive, callous, and condescending. She fancied herself a “decent” person, compared to Bianca, the jealous so-called best friend turned frenemy; however, to me, this was just one big delusion on her part. So she wasn’t a Bianca, but she was just as bad in many other ways, especially in the way she treated Paige. Paige, her neighbour who for years tried to be her friend; alas, poor Paige, you’ve always been too nerdy to Indie’s taste, and so she kept giving you the slip. Until, of course, Indie realised her friends weren’t friends, her boyfriend was a douche, and so she turned to Paige—with all the condescension she could muster, that is:

Paige shakes her head. “Where’s Bianca? Why isn’t she helping you?”
Oh. It’s like that now? You’d think the girl would recognize a bone when one was being thrown.

Except that Paige had started making other friends. The gall! The nerve! How dare you, Paige?

Tears prick my eyes. Of course she has a friend now. Of course she has plans. What did I think, that I could push and push her away and she’d always be there, waiting for me in case I ever got bored of Bianca?

At least she somewhat acknowledges it, but it’s going to take much more to make you a good girl, Indie.

Douches and doormats:

Bianca’s a douche. Stupid Boyfriend Is Stupid, I mean Devon, is a douche. When Indie finds him cheating on her with Bianca—that was so predictable, by the way—and finally stops looking at him as if he was the best thing in the world since cheesewire, Devon is devastated, because, you see:

“You still up for homecoming?”
[…]
Don’t mean to be pushy. I asked around, but everyone good already has a date now.”

Yeah, ditch the guy. At least that was one good decision.

I wish Paige had given her the finger, too. Looks like Paige’s the most decent one in the bunch, and with an ability to forgive. Only to be treated, I wouldn’t say like crap, but as expendable.

Jezebel, too. Way to let people die because you can’t be bothered saving just one more person when you have the upper hand, and are holding your enemy by the balls. If all witches are like her, I’m almost tempted to cheer on the bad guys instead.

Bishop… Not so much a douche, he was actually fairly decent, after a while. Nevertheless, the constant creepy-joker act slowed things down.

Decisions that make absolutely no sense:

Mum’s uber important Witch Bible has been stolen, and Indie promises she’s going to get it back. OK. She has no idea where to start looking. OK again. There was that shady guy, earlier, who helped her with her Mum after a bookshelf fell on her, and who seemed to know about the Bible… Hmmm, shady, all right, but at least it’s a lead: let’s drive around trying to find the guy, who anyway seems to have a knack to stalk Indigo. Might as well use the stalker’s skills against himself, right? So Indie drives around, with Paige in tow. They find the guy. And…
… Banter. Banter, semi-flirting, banter. Pointless dialogue. LOL-I-ain’t-telling-you-much. Followed by “well, let’s go to Jarrod’s party.” I thought retrieving the Bible from the bad guys’ hands was important. I must’ve been mistaken.
I might have forgiven it, if only it hadn’t been one blatant plot device, just for Indie to walk on Devon sleeping with Bianca and make her realise what an idiot Mr. Boyfriend was. Couldn’t this happen in a different way?

They drag Paige along when it comes to attacking the Bad Guys. Because bringing the human girl, the one without any powers, to a fight between witches and sorcerers is the best way to ensure her safety. It’s not like collateral damage could happen. It’s not like someone could notice her and, I don’t know, take her hostage later.

There’s also lot of wandering around, because they need a “quiet place” to talk. The Hollywood sign at night is sure a quiet place, but, again, wasn’t time of the essence?

And it may just be me, but I thought the Priory wasn’t so… active. It was quite nice of them to give Indigo one whole week to mourn her mother, but frankly, since they were the ones who took said mother hostage and then killed her, why waste time? Go hit Indie while she’s down.

Powers and training:

Well, yes, I’d have wanted to see more “witch in training”, more moments when Indigo would grow into her powers, do something with them. I wasn’t asking for anything spectacular, but she really doesn’t do much at all, and so she ends up as the whiny Damsel In Distress throughout the second part of the book.

Romance:

Not played well here in my opinion. I’ll appreciate a romance that develops… when characters have time for that. Here, the situation was kind of urgent, Indie could’ve been attacked at any moment, yet so much time was wasted on flirting and such. In turn, I felt that the plot was being held back in order for the romance to take place. The contrary would’ve been more interesting, and more believable.

So, well… I wish I had liked this one. I was really eager to read it. In the end, unfortunately, it just didn’t work at all for me.

Review: Magic City: Recent Spells

Summary:

Bright lights, big city . . . magic spells, witchcraft, wizardry, fairies, devilry, and more. Urban living, at least in fantasy fiction, is full of both magical wonder and dark enchantment. Street kids may have supernatural beings to protect them or have such powers themselves. Brujeria may be part of your way of life. Crimes can be caused (and solved) with occult arts and even a losing sports team’s “curse” can be lifted with wizardry. And be careful of what cab you call—it might take you on a journey beyond belief! Some of the best stories of urban enchantment from the last few years is gathered in one volume full of hex appeal and arcane arts.

As usual when anthologies are concerned, there are stories one will like, and stories that won’t cut it at all. What I can say about this one, before I ge to the stories individually:

1) Those are reprints. If you’re relatively new to urban fantasy as a genre, and/or usually don’t read anthologies, I think it should be all right. Otherwise, you may already know quite a few of those stories.

2) It may not be tremendously representative of urban fantasy, depending on how you perceive this genre.

3) The book began with the stories I liked the least, and I almost stopped reading at that point. Therefore, I’d advise not reading them in order.

#1 STREET WIZARD: To be read as an introduction rather than a story with a definite plot and punchline. A kind of “slice of life” story, that gives the reader a glimpse into what urban fantasy may entail, but not particularly exciting.

#2 PARANORMAL ROMANCE: Not convinced. The MC’s move (ditching her date) was pretty rude and uncalled for. Because the guy isn’t what you expected doesn’t mean he doesn’t at least deserve a “sorry, not working for me, I’m saying bye”. What’s with those characters who can’t be ballsy enough to enact basic courtesy?

#3 GRAND CENTRAL PARK: Interesting enough, I liked the ending more than the story itself, though.

#4 SPELLCASTER 2.0: Loved the premise, but not the moralistic aspect (nor the intrisic misogyny).

#5 WALLAMELON: I quite liked this one. Its themes are fairly common (the cost of magic, growing up and out of childhood beliefs), but touching nevertheless.

#6 -30-: Not to be read if you’re a writer who has hopes for his/her craft: it’s rather depressing. Worst, 2nd person POV is definitely a terrible idea. I won’t recommend that one.

#7 SEEING EYE: One of my favourites, properly wrapped up, with a definite resolution at the end, but also a couple of openings leaving room to the reader’s imagination.

#8 STONE MAN: Another one I liked. While dealing with serious prospects, it also leaves room for hope and fighting back—both for the main character and when it comes to the bigger picture.

#9 IN THE STACKS: A librarian’s dream come true… Well… A nightmare, rather? Another winner in my book (pun intended). Nobody ever belittle the job of a librarian now!

#10 A VOICE LIKE A HOLE: I liked the theme, but I felt that the story stopped just where it should’ve started. Weird.

#11 THE ARCANE ART OF MISDIRECTION: Not so surprising in theme (normal person discovering magic hiding right under her nose), but with an interesting setting (casino, hotel), and with the kind of magical effects I tend to like.

#12 THE THIEF OF PRECIOUS THINGS: I’m not really sure what to make of this story. I liked its atmosphere, eerie with magic, shapeshifting, a sort of lingering despair, and promises of both hope and dark days to come. I didn’t get a feeling for the characters, but in a way, it’s like it doesn’t really matter.

#13 THE LAND OF HEART’S DESIRE: Hard to tell where this one was was going. I didn’t really feel any sense of direction in it, and it seemed to lack purpose, despite the theme it dealt with.

#14 SNAKE CHARMER: Classic take on revenge. Not developed enough to my taste.

#15 THE SLAUGHTERED LAMB: Drag queen werewolf protagonist: not something you see everyday. Nice one about accepting people for who they are, no matter how different.

#16 THE WOMAN WHO WALKED WITH DOGS: Shadow dogs, always with their owners, yet never seen by those who don’t believe in them… until they’re needed. I’d like a Shep, too.

#17 WORDS: Words have power. Words have magic. Is it wise to annoy the ones who wield true words? Not so much. A retelling on the theme of the Rattenfänger, and one that somewhat resonated with me (perhaps because I fancy myself a writer, too?).

#18 DOG BOYS: New boy in school, thrown into gang hostilities. Likeable protagonist, who does what feels right, even though he knows he’ll get into trouble.

#19 ALCHEMY: Another one I liked. Quiet, and full of questions regarding knowledge: is the price to pay worth it? And if something is gained through other means than our own, is it really so interesting in the end?

#20 CURSES: Short story with Harry Dresden. Not as powerful as the novel-length stories, but still pretty much in the “Dresden Files” spirit.

#21 DE LA TIERRA: A twist on immigration stories. I liked how it dealt with misinformation, and how the latter can push people to do what they think is right, but isn’t necessarily so.

#22 STRAY MAGIC: Cute and moving story. This one should appeal to animal lovers.

#23 KABU KABU: Quite enjoyable, if (like me) you like crazy rides with strange landscapes and creatures from folklore. Also interesting for its take on one’s identity, since Ngozi, the protagonist, is somewhat estranged from her own culture.

#24 PEARLYWHITE: More on the horror side. Somewhat weak on the protagonists, because there are several, and a short story isn’t the best format to develop them. But I still liked it, as well as the gleam of hope at the end.

Review: Shadows & Dreams

A few weeks ago, I was hired for a simple missing person case. Next thing I know, I’m being arrested for murder, a vampire army is tearing up London, and even my dreams are out to get me. Something ancient, evil, and scary as hell is on the loose and looking for payback. The vampires are in chaos, the werewolves are culling everything, and the Witch Queen can’t protect everyone.

Which means it’s down to me. And all I’ve got to hold back the shadows is a stiff drink, a quirky sidekick, my creepy ex-boyfriend, and the woman who left me for a tech startup. It’s going to be another interesting day.

This title is #2 of the Kate Kane, Paranormal Investigator series.

I liked this one better than the first one. Partly because I already know the characters, but also, I think, because I found it less heavy on some of the things that had bothered me in the previous volume.

Characters, first. The reader will meet known ones again: Julian, Nimue, Ashriel, and get to know more about others (such as a Eve). Kate remains a fun point of view character, with a good dose of humour even in dire situations. She has a tendency to do things that aren’t exactly good for her, but at least she acknowledges it… even though it doesn’t prevent her from getting into dangerous situations. Elise plays a more important part, being here from the beginning, this time, and I must say she’s also a character I’ve taken quite a liking to. She’s discovering life as a normal human being (well, as normal as possible in the circumstances, that is), has an interesting way of speaking and apprehending the world, and I found that her becoming Kate’s assistant actually helped with furthering the plot. In “Iron & Velvet”, I sometimes felt that Kate stumbled upon information; Elise being tasked with finding information streamlines things a bit, and makes the investigation more believable in my opinion. Last but not least, Eve: she may seem bigger than life to some, but I found her geeky, Batman-wannabe side quite funny. And she gets the job done; no comic-relief useless sidekick on her part here.

There was less romance/erotica this time, and for me, it was for the best. I guess I’m used to the Kate-Julian relatioship now, so I wasn’t bothered by insta-love or anything similar. Owing to the plot, the two women didn’t spend as much time together, which wasn’t pleasant for them, sure, but also allowed less room for the sex scenes. (I don’t have anything against sex scenes, only they didn’t work for me in book 1, in part because of the weird similes often associated with them. So, yes, less of those here meant less clunky scenes in my opinion.) Although I still think Kate should learn to keep her dick in her pants, metaphorically speaking, she wasn’t as unfocused as previously, and therefore felt more believable as a PI.

I must admit that the Patrick/Sofia routine, while funny at first (with all the drama queen antics and the woe-is-me-I-totally-shape-the-world-to-my-beliefs attitude that clearly hints at bad emo stories), became a little tiresome after a while. I must’ve rolled my eyes as often as Kate did. But then, Patrick is an infuriating character, and one that is meant to serve as a comic relief.

The bit about the Vampire: the Requiem game made me smile. No irony lost here. It reminded me a bit of the RPG bit in Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files, and I wonder if this was intentional or not? On the other hand, I’m certainly not holding that against the author here, because it’s the kind of scene I like (and would probably write as well at some point).

Not the best book of 2014 for me, but definitely an improvement on the first one. I think I’ve warmed up to this world and characters.

Hard to tell whether I liked it, or found it simply “OK”, so let’s consider this a 2.5 stars.

There are a lot of good ideas in this novel. About the magical community (the Alliance isn’t so big, the Family is likely to become a pain in the neck at some point). About the various kinds of magic, that I haven’t seen used that often in urban fantasy yet (weaving magic and psychometry, that is). About items and how they can become beacon of positive or negative energies. It goes to show that even the most inconspicuous little things can be harbingers of danger. And a store full of antiques, acting as cover for the magic folk to gather those special items and prevent them from falling into the wrong hands? Quaint and delightful—much like the town of Charleston, for which I could get quite a good feeling through the many little stories. (One of the secondary characters works in the historical archives. I tell you, you always need to know someone who works in a museum or something. Always.)

Another thing I liked was that, for once, there was no romance here. I don’t dislike romance, but sometimes I find there’s too much of it in UF in general, and it can more easily detract from the darkness and magic. Here, I didn’t want to read about a love story: I wanted to read about the antique shop, the mysterious items, Cassidy’s power, and so on. And this is what I got. So I was glad.

Unfortunately, this novel just didn’t click with me. I’m not even sure why exactly. I liked the ideas, the characters seemed interesting, but I never connected with them. I don’t think we get to see Sorren before the 30% mark, if I remember well, which I found too bad. As for the demon hunter, it was kind of annoying that he was introduced so late into the story, then made to die; his death would’ve been more striking if I had got to know him better. Yes, I’m a masochist. I know.

Regularly enough, I also found myself a little bored. It may have been because of the writing style: usually good when it came to descriptions of places, or to the stories passed around regarding the town and its inhabitants, but somewhat clunky in other parts. Examples would include repeated uses of the same first name in three consecutive short sentences, or some dialogue lines basically stating the same thing twice in a row. At first, I didn’t really notice it, but after a while, it started weighing down the narrative. The pace was perhaps a little too slow as well, though I can’t tell if this was because of the aforementioned style, or if it was just sluggish.

I’d place this novel among the ones that aren’t uninteresting, and could blossom into a good series; however, so far, I’m not really convinced.

I enjoyed some parts of this novel, while others left me cold, so in the end, I rounded it up to 3 stars: I didn’t like the first half much, but found the second one better. (I guess this is one of those books I might have given up on in the beginning if I hadn’t requested it (with the implicit promise of a review); fortunately, after a while, it finally worked for me.)

Andromeda didn’t strike me as remarkable, indeed, though not because of her place as the “invisible” second daughter, the one always wedged between her two sisters, and of whom nobody seemed to expect much. The reason why I had my qualms with her at first was that she remained mostly passive, let things happen, let her family decide to whisk her away to Windroven, and so on. Once she decided to take matters into her own hands, the dynamics shifted, and the story went onto a more interesting road. Andi made plans, thought more in terms of alliance and politics, and turned out to be more savvy than her wallflower-princess role had led me to believe. Good thing, good thing.

Annfwn was quite a fascinating place, too, and I enjoyed learning more about it, and about the mysterious Tala, with their shapeshifting abilities and their “dark” magic that may or may not be the worst thing in the world. Boundaries were continuously tested and shifted: the actual boundary between Annfwn and the Kingdoms, as well as the characters’ loyalties. Andi’s come to mind first and foremost, yet her sisters’ mettle will no doubt be tested, too. (I admit I would’ve liked to see more of this in the present novel; on the other hand, there would be a lot to show here, so I can understand that the focus here was on Andromeda—book 2’s focus will be on Amelia, from what I saw in the preview, and we might assume that book 3 will be from Ursula’s point of view?)

Throughout the story, I got to see sympathetic, antipathic, and grey-area characters. In the beginning, the court of Uorsin is shown as a place of nobility, with its “brought peace to all the kingdoms” gleam and its shiny guests (such as Hugh, overall a positive man, but not so blandly goody-two-shoes as his Prince Charming side leads people to think). Rayfe provides a rather striking contrast: dark, rough, a demanding, ruthless alpha-male who only cares about what he wants. However, the story soon points at different interpretations. The King’s suspicious attitude towards his own daughter after her meeting with Rayfe, his way of immediately considering her a potential traitor (while her only “crime” was to be assaulted during a ride), clearly show that he’s not so kind nor benevolent. There’s a lot of talk about loyalty in here—Ursula’s toward the crown, the continuous questioning of Andi’s, Amelia’s love and devotion to her family—but in the end, the most loyal ones aren’t always the ones who’re most vocal about it. Other characters are also ambiguous: Zevondeth with her mysterious demand, Dafne who may or may not hide deeper motives…

Mostly my problems with this story, and why I didn’t give it a higher rating:

1) In the first half, Andi comes off as your average YA-novel narrator, which I found a bit juvenile. This seemed to coincide with her passiveness, though, and I felt it less and less as the story went on. Kind of like having her “grow up” at some point and make conscious decisions, become a stronger person who’s been coerced once, but won’t be again, not if she can help it. (So this “problem” was soon solved.)

2) Rayfe: I usually don’t abide by dominating males who speak and act as if the woman doesn’t have a say in the matter, and Rayfe was exactly that. After all, he was ready to besiege a whole castle, take prisoners, and perhaps worse to get Andi. On the other hand, he could’ve done those things much sooner, and somehow he also appeared as wishing to wait for Andi to come to him of her own free will. But it was free will thwarted by threat. But she—not Rayfe—was the one who decided on a plan that was definitely cunning and not so kind. So, yes, I had anticipated Rayfe as a much, much worse character, and was pleasantly surprised when he actually showed himself as still somewhat decent. Ruthless, yet not a complete boor either.
(Also, I had to remind myself that in such a setting, noble people so often got married for politics and alliances rather than love. While it seems pressuring to me as a woman, of course, it still fits the theme of this story. Andi acknowledges that such a marriage would be for politics only, just like Ursula’s would have been.)

3) The romance itself: I’m definitely shared on that one. I still have no idea whether Andi loves Rayfe, or simply lusts after him. Sometimes she seemed to consider things under the “it’ll only be political, so let’s try to be friendly at least” angle, sometimes it felt like she couldn’t live without him. I really didn’t understand her in that regard, and she seems rather confused herself on the matter. As for the sex scenes, they didn’t work for me, mostly because of the vocabulary, though: the story being told from the point of view of a princess, in first person, we can’t really have vulgar words thrown in… but phrases such as “my nether tissues” just made me roll my eyes and wish the story jumped back to the magic and politics faster.

4) In my opinion, while it was great that Andromeda understood and mastered her powers, I found it came to her just a tad bit too quickly. A matter of pacing, maybe? Too much time spent on her hesitation in the beginning (and on the sex scenes as well—they were eye-candy for me, nothing more)? All in all, I suppose I was more interested in the politics here, and in how Andi would “earn” her place in the second half of the book… so it may just be me.

What is and isn’t a problem: I wanted to learn even more about Annfwn and its magic. For instance, a lot of it revolves around blood. Blood purity taken too far and producing weak offspring. Having enough Tala blood to get back into their home country, or remaining stranded outside. The whole deal with the blood phials: Salena’s one, of course, but also that innocuous little phial Zevondeth asks from Andromeda… and I’m sure that one will get to bite our princess in the back at some point! The fact that Tala royalty seems to be linked to queens rather than kings, in spite of Rayfe’s position. And let’s not forget the dichotomy between the rumours about Annfwn, and the country Andi discovers: are the rumours totally wrong, or are there darker secrets yet to be revealed? Lots, lots of fascinating aspects, that I hope will be developed in the next book, because I wanted more.

Conclusion: enjoyable story, not more than a “Like” due to the reasons mentioned above, but still interesting enough that I’ll consider picking Amelia’s story once it comes out.

Review: A Creature of Moonlight

This novel was a delightful read, with enchanting prose that kept me enthralled—not too little description, not too much, and lyrical enough without diving head-first into purple prose. It was permeated with an eerie atmosphere, and there was something definitely haunting to that world encroached upon by nature and strange creatures from the woods. The latter were appealing, intriguing, making me thinkg that I, too, would want to see what was hidden in them. And I enjoyed the depiction of “sorcery”, the concept of knitting spells and/or creatures sent to do one’s bidding. I don’t think I’ve seen that in a story yet, so it was quite new for me, and I found the idea interesting, even though it didn’t turn out as it was meant at first.

I appreciated how women in general were shown here as people with the power to choose. Even though at first, some may seem powerless, drawn into an unwanted existence, or used as pawns, in the end, they want to exert their own power of choosing, and don’t hesitate to state it. Marni doesn’t necessarily know where she’s going, but at least she knows she doesn’t want someone else to decide for her. She could’ve given in easily to pressure. She could’ve married the lord and placed herself under his protection, thus making her life easier; but I think this would also have been the easy way out, the expected romantic outcome; I dreaded it, and that it didn’t happen felt refreshing for a change.

Marni’s also a character who grows up and learns. She’d have had many opportunities and reasons to enact revenge on those who failed and/or hurt her, but she didn’t act with too much haste, she pondered her decisions, and she seemed to me like a level-headed enough person.

The one thing that prevented me from liking this book more was how it kept meandering after a while, as if Marni’s thoughts were somewhat running in circles. It left me feeling that there was little sense of urgency to the story, that things “happened” in a slow way, and not to the extent they should’ve been happening. Considering Marni’s circumstances, for instance, I found it strange that events at court weren’t more intense. She speaks of several attempts on her life, yet those didn’t look as threatening as they were likely meant to be. So the story was beautiful, but there were a few moments when I wished it would go a tad bit faster.

3.5 stars. In spite of my qualms, this is a book I’d recommend.

Review: Iron & Velvet

It always goes the same way. You move too fast, you get in too deep, and before you know it, someone winds up dead. Last time it was my partner. This time it could be me. Yesterday a werewolf was murdered outside the Velvet, the night-time playground of one of the most powerful vampires in England. Now half the monsters in London are at each other’s throats, and the other half are trying to get in my pants. The Witch Queen will protect her own, the wolves are out for vengeance, and the vampires are out for, y’know, blood.

I’ve got a killer on the loose, a war on the horizon, and a scotch on the rocks. It’s going to be an interesting day.

Review:

A fun read in several ways. I quite liked the tone in general, as well as some of the characters. I think Elise remains my favourite, even though she doesn’t appear that much, and I can only side with Julian when she says, basically, that “very few people manage to give life to something inanimate, it’s a great feat of ancient, difficult magic… and most of the time, they use their creation as a sex toy.” But then, I’m always partial towards golems. And London, because I love this city. Blood magic and creepy fairies and a hive mind of rats. And there’s a Geat vampire prince. Seriously, how fucking cool is that?

However, after a while, some of the recurrent sass became a little, well, too recurrent—notably Kate’s “Huh” and her tendency to underline the crappy situations in which she put herself in (“Here lies Kate Kane, blah blah. Beloved daughter. Sorely missed.”). She didn’t strike me as a good investigator, spending too much time running here and there grasping at straws, too easily distracted, and I felt that the lead she needed rested too much on happenstance, and was made for plot convenience, rather than something a talented investigator could deduce (or maybe she should have deduced it, considering her origins?). At times I wanted to bang my head and call a too stupid to live on her.

I really didn’t connect with the Kate/Julian relationship. I do get lust, physical attraction, spur-of-the-moment desire, but I tend to find it hard to believe when it turns into strong ties in barely a few days. Certainly not when 800-year-old immortals are concerned (I’d expect them to be more jaded about that). The “sweeting” bit got on my nerves pretty quickly—but I have a hard time with pet names in general. Also, every other female wanted to do Kate, or had been her girlfriend, it seems, and this is treading too much into Mary Sue territory to my liking. As for the sex scenes, they weren’t so exciting—too much purple prose and weird metaphors (“She lay underneath me like an unexploded grenade”… How to put it… Uhm, no?).

I still don’t know if the hints at other stories (Patrick, for instance) are intentional, winks, or lack of inspiration. They’re fun, in a way, but… I don’t know.

2 or 2.5 stars, not sure. I can’t say I disliked this novel, because it does contain elements that make me go squee; however, I can’t say I loved it either.
