This novel is quite a short one—too short, in fact, for the scope it seemed to want to reach. Maybe it’s a case of “first book in a series syndrome”. Anyway, I found the premise interesting, but kept wishing it went deeper into some of its aspects, and developed things more than it did.

The plot felt somewhat muddled, rushing in parts, not really going anywhere in others. I’m still wondering what exactly it was about. A reanimator, sure, and a gallery of other characters that looked like they were introduced for later use mostly, because while they helped with things like clothing, they didn’t really do more. But I didn’t exactly feel a sense of urgency, and it was as if some hints and links between events were thrown in, in a disjointed way.

The banter between Art and Jim was likeable at times, definitely weird at others, taking space that might have been better used for more scenes, more plot development. Art’s way of speaking was also rather quirky, the whole Quaker business leaving me perplexed: I didn’t understand to which degree it was relevant. She seemed like an interesting character enough as it was, with a lot of potential, without the need to add such quirks. Maybe reading the sequel would allow me to appreciate them more… or maybe not. I honestly can’t tell.

I would also have liked to know more about this organisation resurrecting criminals while wiping their memories. Not “more” in terms of secrets (every such organisation needs secrets, to be revealed later), but as in “a larger view of its agents”. Who else was involved? How does the Secret Commission operate, since everybody appears to know about it and either respect or fear their badges? There’s some potential here as well, and I’m positive it would have deserved more spotlight in this first installment. Just a few more agents walking around, to make me feel like Jim, Art and Fall weren’t the only ones.

Art’s leaning towards other women was also dealt with a little too strangely to my liking, in that the way it was revealed, the way it unfurled, felt wonky and jarring. It’s probably a pacing problem more than anything else, because I had the same feeling with other scenes, as mentioned above. However, it was also good to see it accepted by other characters as something that just happens, something that “is”. Though Jim makes a few quips about it, it’s in a friendly way, the same kind of way he comments about other situations.

I’m not sure I’d pick the next book. It’s more a 1.5* for me, leaning towards a 2, because there are intriguing elements about which I’d like to learn more, so you never know… But not if it’s as disjointed as in this one.

I should have read and reviewed this book sooner, but as things go, more and more book piled up. As usual, you might say.

The Secrets of Life and Death was an entertaining story, loosely based in part on the half-history, half-legend surrounding the infamous Elisabeth Bathory. It weaves two different narratives, the first one set in modern England, the second one focused on John Dee, told in first person by his assistant Edward Kelley. People who read my reviews should know by now that I’m usually partial to time/space shifts; I enjoyed those here, for they provided enough information while gradually bringing everything together, even though I’d have a few qualms regarding the last installments of Dee & Kelley’s adventure (in the end, I thought they tended to drag a little).

I also quite liked the modern part, two of its characters being “revenants” of sorts: people who should’ve died, but whose death could be foretold. As such, a witch managed to get to them just in time to place them within protective sigils, making them dependent on that magic to keep “surviving”, yet still providing them with what they call “borrowed time.” It’s probably not the most original concept ever, but it’s definitely not a rehashed take on “people coming back from the dead” either. Also, the magic described throughout the novel was intriguing and interesting: the revenants are weak in more than one way, unable to go far from their sigils, and the reasons to create them are both humane and rather selfish. That’s a greay enough area to my liking.

Two things I found fault with, though. The first was the romance, which felt stilted and forced. The attraction between Jack and Felix came too fast (which is why I won’t consider this a major spoiler), and developed in awkward ways. Understandable? Perhaps. However, in my typical way of perceiving things (in other word, “guys, there are more pressing matters of life and death to tackle here”), it didn’t register as absolutely necessary to the story. As for the second point, it’s more minor: I’d just would’ve liked more explanations about how Saraquel managed to speak to Edward (and here I’m not saying more, because that would be a spoiler).

3.5 stars nonetheless, and a story I’d easily recommend: not the best ever, but still worth reading to spend a good afternoon/evening.

Review: Ash and the Army of Darkness

This volume collects issues 1 to 8 of the comics, which pick up right after where the Army of Darkness movie left off—at least, if memory serves right. Ash is pulled back in 1300 to face more Deadites and a renewed threat, this time because the one he left the Book of the Dead with might not have been the best choice. (Not that anyone would have been a best choice: it seems the book has a will of its own.)

I found the book somewhat close to what I remember of the movies—Ash being both badass and somewhat stupid at times (the Faceless Man part is quite a good example of that, and I can say I wanted to facepalm just as much as the other character involved). However, I regularly felt that more could have happened, and that the plot didn’t move that fast, although the action scenes were drawn in a fairly dynamic way. The PDF copy I got had very clear lettering; on the other hand, some panels appeared a little bit blurry, and I don’t know if this is on purpose, or just a scanning problem due to this being an ARC. As for Ash, sometimes he really looked like the one from the movies, but not always; that was disconcerting.

An OK read for me, though a somewhat forgettable one. I’m not sure I’d pick the next volume.

How To Date Dead Guys was a nice read, light enough and even funny in parts, while also more serious in others. The problems Emma ran into, trying to cover up for the several guys she accidentally brought back from the dead, sometimes made me smile. At the same time, the novel also provided interesting (if typical) questions about “what would you do if you had a second chance at coming to terms with something you couldn’t finish before your death?” Every single one of the drowned men left something behind them, something unfinished, whether it concerned themselves, a relative, or a lover; and those stories were all touching in their own ways. I couldn’t help but agree with them, with their choices to “make it right” or at least try to see what had become of their loved ones.

Emma as a protagonist was fine enough: painfully shy at first, but gaining confidence as she grew into her powers and was also forced to come up with lies to hide what she had done—this with a hint of being tempted in the future by this same power she’s acquired. It’s not the main focus of this first installment in the series, but I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss her desire to keep the Book of Shadows even though it put her in this mess for starters. (First one guy, then another, then three, and all with their own issues? Definitely a mess.) I also liked Jake a lot: infuriating at first, and seemingly a jerk, but one with a heart of gold, who opened Emma’s eyes on more than one thing. He wasn’t even so much a jerk, in fact, than a sociable guy who enjoyed life and took it as it came to get the best out of it, even in death. The outcome of his own predicament was a bit predictable, but cute nonetheless.

And I guess the cuteness factor is one of the things that made me like this book (that, and necromancy—let’s face it, it is necromancy, and I’m always partial to such magic). Even though the novel sometimes bordered on the “too cute”, it was enjoyable. Sure, it might seem cheesy, and yet I just want to say: “So what?” Sometimes we need twee plots and characters. Sometimes we need twee plots and characters. Sometimes I like myself such a book, and considering I had a hard time putting it down for long, I’d say it quite reached its goal.

It’s also light on the romance: there are several men involved, so it stands to logics that Emma wouldn’t get into a relationship with all of them. She’s not immune to their different personalities, their qualities, their quirks, but she manages to remember that nothing can come out of this (them being obviously doomed to become dead again at some point), and in my opinion, such budding relationships, condemned from the beginning, actually helped her grow as a person, going from fickle, almost teenager-like “first attraction” feelings to a deeper understanding of life and love.

On the other hand, I found a couple of things too exaggerated (everyone blaming Emma for Mike’s death was like kicking the proverbial puppy, and Chrissy seemed just so terribly superficial and “me, me, me” that she became tiring—good thing she doesn’t appear much). Moreover, I found the plotline a little too over the place, in that it wove the stories of all those guys, along with Emma’s, Abby’s, Walker’s, and a few others, but didn’t seem to have a really definite plot. The part about the murders came a little too late to my liking, and almost felt like a kind of afterthought, as if the novel suddenly had to be more serious than it had been up until now. There are some hints here and there, but the characters just don’t seem that bothered about them, except perhaps for two (who don’t voice out their suspicions, though, so they’re only proved right later).

I’m giving it 3/3.5 stars “only” because of that, but I’ll still recommend it if you’re looking for a light read that is sometimes fun, sometimes mellow, and sometimes sad.

3.5 stars. I had my qualms with this novel, but overall it had just the right amount of tension and mystery going to keep me wanting to turn the pages. And, of course, it’s got necromancy. I am always biased towards necromancy. Nothing can go wrong with necro—wait, what am I saying?

Though inspired from Metropolis, I found it to be able to stand on its own, through its mix of 1930-ish atmosphere and magic, the latter not exactly of the nice kind (even the Binding magic has its nasty side-effects). Some scenes bordered on gory and/or disturbing, and could scare younger readers, but they’re also tempered with an overall glitzy darkness, if this makes sense. We’re not given a lot of world-building, only general facts, such as the war that happened a few years ago, food shortages, people having to work in some mysterious factory, the government hiding things; I think this may or may not be a problem depending on the reader. It still worked for me, because it was reminiscent of the historical period that inspired the novel (late 1920-early 1930s Germany), and the feeling I got from this was more important than the absolute need to know everything about that world. Although I would like to know more about what exactly has been happening behind the scenes in other places than the one shown here; maybe in the next volume?

The characters were likeable, but not exceptional. I had the feeling that they were glossed over in parts, and that some events occurred too fast for them to really develop bonds. Freddy and Thea, mainly, barely meet a couple of times before he tells her everything, and this wasn’t so believable. I also found myself rooting for Nan and Sigi more than anyone else, even though Nan is barely mentioned in the blurb and we’re somewhat mistakingly led to believe Thea’s the main heroine. On the other hand, they had touching back stories, and I was still glad to see some sort of closure for them. It made for a bittersweet ending, but I wouldn’t have seen a happy-ever-ending for such a novel.

As for the plot, I found the idea to bring back dead people to life through necromancy brilliant; it’s so simple, it makes so much sense, and at the same time, it’s just so horribly fascinating that you don’t know in the end if you want to hug those people or put a bullet through their eyes, out of mercy, that is. I liked that there was a severe drawback to it, that they needed the serum to function; no magic should go without its price to pay, and Freddie himself was paying it without even knowing it. The other thing I liked about his magic was how it was in fact a good magic, one made to appease people, and not to create undead armies. Arabella’s sacrifice was moving, and helped show that Freddie could also do beautiful things using his powers.

I would however argue that things unfolded a little too quickly and easily in the last part of the book; I would’ve expected more spunk and deviousness from the villains, who went down too fast to my liking. I guess this ties with my comments about events when I mentioned the characters. I’m also rather puzzled about the whole “Guardian of Fate” business; it seemed a bit like a deus ex machina, and could’ve deserved a slightly different approach.

Dark Metropolis is, as said, not devoid of flaws; but its atmosphere and its take on necromancy definitely allowed me to enjoy it.

Review: Death Whispers

Review:

DNFed at 42%. I can’t trudge through it any longer, not without booze, and I guess this is a sure sign I shouldn’t go on.

I wanted to like this story so, so badly. You can’t imagine. Necromancy is exactly the kind of magic (or, more generally, power) that fascinates me, for all the possibilities it offers and questions it raises, and from the blurb, I thought I would love this story. Even the acronym for Caleb’s ability (AFTD – Affinity For The Dead) got my attention.

But I just can’t, for the following reasons:

Juvenile prose, for starters. Granted, the narrator is supposed to be 13-14, However, the jumbled thoughts, run-on sentences and limited vocabulary still made it hard to go through the story. Some sentences were also really weird:

“Mom liked to notice me growing by saying my eyeballs were “taller” than whatever random day she had noticed before.”

Huh?

Too much useless dialogue and everyday life scenes. Those needed serious trimming. I don’t demand action and only action, but I really don’t need to know about every breakfast food, teenage thought, phone (sorry, pulse) conversation, and so on. There’s a fine line to tread between “characters who’re still schooled yet are never seen in class/doing homework” and “detailing every school day”. Here, it was just too much of the latter. On top of it, Caleb’s observations weren’t particularly interesting.

Annoying characters, especially Jonesy. Jonesy wasn’t funny nor clever. He was just the kind of moronic teenage boy who’s probably going to earn a Darwin Award someday. From the start, I just couldn’t stand him. With such friends, who still needs enemies?

And then, then: Too Stupid To Live characters. The whole lot, adults included.

The premise seems to be about Caleb not wanting to end up like the one guy who had exactly the same abilities as him (basically, this would mean being stripped of all his freedom and human rights, and be used as a government tool). So why, why does he have to blab about it to everyone, and show off his power? In the most idiotic ways possible?

He faints in biology class due to “hearing” all the dead frogs. However, he doesn’t want the two school bullies to think he’s a sissy. What does he do? Take them to the local cemetery and raises some random bloke from his grave.
The guys are bullies. They never miss an opportunity to taunt him. Worst people ever to show off to.

He raises a dead dog in the middle of the street. With plenty of witnesses around.

“A cop’s interest in our lives couldn’t be a good thing, whatever angle you look from.”

Oh, really?
Then why did you tell said cop about his being AFTD?

“Garcia looked at Mom thoughtfully. […] I decided to man-up, I wasn’t little anymore.
I broke the silence. “I have Affinity for The Dead.””

A cop. Not a bad guy overall, but still, someone whose duty involves reporting people like Caleb:

“If I find out you’re a Cadaver-Manipulator, we are lawfully bound to report that to the proper authorities.”

And it’s not only Caleb. It’s everyone.

Jonesy doesn’t seem to grasp the basic concept of “talking about Caleb’s abilities could mean the government finding out”. Of course, he flaps his mouth in front of Caleb’s parents and the cop:

“Jonesy piped in, “I still wanna know what happened to the dog.””

(Caleb did a mental facepalm; so did I.)

The two bullies? They don’t rat Caleb out. Seriously, if I had been a villain, and disliked some guy like they seemed to dislike him, I’d have used that golden opportunity to get rid of him.

His parents: they’re supposed to be the growns-up. His father’s the one who mapped up the whole human genome, thus paving the way to the tests and injection that would later awaken latent abilities in teenagers. Like Parker (the first AFTD). Like Caleb. I expected much more from them. They didn’t deliver.
Example: they want to test his abilities. The best course of action they devise is to take him to the cemetery to talk to his great-grandmother, and potentially, raise her from her grave (by the time it happens, they already suspect he’s not just the basic AFTD kid who can merely see and talk to ghosts).

“Mom began, ‘We’ve thought about it and decided that after this whole mess is over,’ her smile said the mess wasn’t my fault […]”

I’m sorry to break the news to you, Caleb, but yes, it is. It is your fault. At this point, you’re too stupid to be left running free, because who knows what harm you could do, considering the dumb ideas you and your pals could still come up with?

A wonder he hasn’t been discovered/ratted out already. I won’t find out on my own, though. I’m giving up.

I had a bit of a hard time getting into the story at first, as the style felt a little too convoluted at times, and the whole present tense + 1st/3rd person POV shifts weren’t needed in my opinion.

Contrary to what usually happens with such stories, I ended up liking the romance part better than the witches one. It wasn’t particularly original—a young woman from a very conservative background, betrothed to a young man from an equally conventional background, falls in love with a a starving artist, and finds herself torn between what society dictates and what her heart truly wants. Though there’s chemistry between Lilith and Bram from the beginning, I thought their relationship progressed in a believable way, and that their fears and questioning about said relationship were understandable, considering the place and time period. Again, it wasn’t very original in itself, no surprises here, but it still worked, unlike too many romance plots I’ve seen in the past couple of years. Also, bubbly Charlotte wasn’t an important character, but I liked her way of being. Same with Gudrun; blunt, haughty, yet to-the-point Gudrun.

The witches-related plot, on the other hand, made me roll my eyes several times, because I couldn’t believe how the ninnies had managed to actually survive for so long. Here we have an ancient coven full of necromancers (nice ones, who only speak to the dead and don’t try to raise them every Saturday evening), but they didn’t do much, and didn’t seem very organised. That part (i.e. half the novel) seemed to rest on inconsistencies and deus ex machina, and it didn’t work for me at all. A few examples:
* When it’s time for Lilith to officially become Head Witch, someone in the coven challenges her to prove her worth. The challenge, as per the coven’s rules, is to summon then send back a demon, something that is considered as very hard and dangerous, and ended in the death of more than one witch in the past when the demon went on a rampage. For starters, why was this even a trial? Shouldn’t a coven leader realise that stooping down to this isn’t a very wise solution? Why was this rule still in effect, and not replaced by something difficult, but that may not end up with people dying?
* The challenger was a spy from the Sentinels, a group of enemy sorcerers. Everyone was wearing masks, and he had disguised his voice, so they didn’t know who it was. The senior witches decide to investigate and see who joined their coven in the past years, to try and find the spy. Then… Nothing.
* At some point, Lilith learns the name of her enemy. At least another member of the coven knows, too, because said enemy tries blackmail on that person. Were the other witches ever informed? If no, why? If yes, why didn’t they do anything?
* Very early in the story, Lilith finds herself haunted by a spirit. Why didn’t the coven band to destroy it? Lilith only enlisted the help of ONE witch. As if that would work.
* A first hard strike against Lilith. Someone dies. Then the war happens, and the enemy… does nothing to press his luck and gain some more ground.
* The Elixir, the one that can resurrect people and that the Sentinels so badly want, is on the verge of being stolen. It’s World War I: suddenly a bomb falls on the house. The thief and his acolytes die. Convenient.
* Lilith must keep the coven a secret from non-witches. But she reveals things easily enough to her lover. No wonder some deemed her unsuitable to be Head Witch.
There were other inconsistencies, and making a very detailed list would be tedious, so I’m going to stop here.

In general, I found the “nice witches” way too bland and passive. They had that whole coven, that power, they knew who their enemy was, they could’ve struck him, could’ve done, well, anything but they didn’t. They just seemed to wait in the background, wait for something to happen, not making moves of their own. I couldn’t understand why. (The matter of fragile balance or whatever else might have justified non-interference wasn’t raised, so I assumed it wasn’t an issue.)

I wish I had liked this novel more, but alas, it didn’t happen.

The Necromancer’s Gambit is one of those conundrum books I don’t exactly know how to rate, because it had strong good sides, but also strong points that disagreed with me. Part of me liked it, while another part didn’t really want to go through with it.

Mostly I was really interested in the background it developed, with mages organised in groups (“gambits”) aiming at settling disputes, protecting their cities, and so on. Each gambit has a defined set of members, named after chess pieces, with defined roles: Kings and Queens on the political scene, Rooks as guardians, Knights acting as sheriffs, and so on. These members are also well-versed in different kinds of magic, from tracking spells to necromancy to devising bombs and traps. There are definitely lots of possibilities and combinations here, especially considering the presence of other supernaturals such as vampires in town, and I don’t doubt the series—since this is book #1—aims at exploiting them more later.

There’s also mystery, a noir flavour, murder attempts, murders performed through the use of gruesome magic, necromancy (I’m such a weakling for necromancy)… It’s certainly not a kind world. And the novel plays on enough different aspects, between action and investigation, that a reader will likely find something to his/her taste in it.

However, I found it hard to focus on the story, and it came down to two problems for me. The first was editing. Some sentences had a weird structure, making them hard to follow (punctuation included). Sometimes, it was also difficult to follow who was talking, and who was the POV character for a given chapter (mostly Knight, with forays into Rook’s and Pawn’s sides of the adventure). Also, I think some bits of dialogue should’ve been omitted, as they made scenes a little too long. This ties into the second problem: a serious overload of sexual jokes and innuendos? Now, this is coming from someone whose degree of well-being is measured by her friends by the amount of dirty jokes she makes (I’m worse in that regard than most men I know). Such jokes normally don’t bother me… but there were just too many of them, in situations where they fell flat and disrupted the narrative flow. Almost every character would sooner or later talk about his junk—or someone else’s; more than once I found myself thinking “why aren’t they getting to the point instead of mentioning X’s dick or Y’s boobs or whatever? It’s been going on for ten chapters.” As a consequence of those two issues, I tended to lose track too often, and I bet it prevented me from seeing some of the more subtle sides of the story. (A shame, since betrayal’s involved.)

I’m definitely liking the world those characters evolve in, and I wouldn’t mind discovering more about it. As it was, though, I’d have appreciated it much more without all the asides.

As Jasmine is drawn to this enigma of a man, she soon realizes there is more to him than what she initially perceived — his true motives are beyond anything she could ever imagine…

Review:

A story I enjoyed in general, but I think it would’ve deserved to be a little longer, in order to develop the characters some more, as well as give more details about Jasmine’s apprenticeship per se.

The main problem I had with this story was Jasmine’s passiveness towards what happened around her. Her shutting off all emotions made her too bland, like a blank slate on which it’d be easy to write. Had she had a little more passion in her, it might have allowed for more development, for explanations about how she came to accept her new life—the latter was an abrupt change, after all, with a lot of disturbing events happening, and she went through those like a breeze. There was an abrupt shift in the middle of the book, that I wasn’t sure I really grasped: one moment, she was all resentful towards Dagg, then in the next chapter she talked about him as her beloved Master. This, in my opinion, would have needed more “showing” instead of “telling”, for readers to really feel how she went from one side to the other. I would also have liked to see more of the Master’s teachings.

On the other hand, I quite enjoyed the second part, and the themes explored through this novella. Necromancy is a fascinating subject in itself, because of the questions it raises. The narrative is often fraught with ambiguity: permeated with a dark, corrupted magic that demands “experiments” to be performed, yet hauntingly beautiful in many ways. Some descriptions may need editing, because they were just a tad too flowery and bordering on purple prose. But some others were strong and to the point, albeit in a gruesome way. Although we’re not shown much of the world in which the story unfolds, it’s alright, because we don’t actually need to know: the secluded cave and marshes are good things, providing readers with a definite focus on the characters. This is why I wished we could see more development on that side, for the setting itself is perfect in that regard.

I still don’t know whether I should give this book 2 or 3 stars. However, for now, I’m going to settle on 3 all the same: there’s definitely potential in this story.

And then, in a frightening attack, a zombie delivers a letter to Eleanor… from her brother.

Balancing between 3 and 4 stars here.

I found the book fast-paced enough to my liking, as well as convincing in terms of mores: Elanor’s mother is concerned about keeping up appearances, about her daughter snagging off a rich husband to save the family from ruin… all things that fit, in my opinion, with matters related to societies with a strong bent on social classes. The book reads fast, too, and I regularly wanted to pick it up again. Not to mention that necromancy is one of those kinds of magic that I always enjoy reading about.

On the other hand, and while I consider myself a pretty clueless reader whose disbelief is easily suspended, I found that too many things were predictable early in the story. Well-tied together, granted, but predictable, to the point that sometimes I just wanted to tell the character what an idiot she was for not understanding the clues left everywhere. Also, this book falls in my own personal catgegory of “how is it steampunk?”. Steampunk is easy to render in illustrations, but not so much in words, and slapping off a few contraptions, goggles and some engine in an exhibition isn’t enough for me to justify the label. This may be merely a personal pet peeve, but I still believe that too many authors, publishers and readers don’t understand what exactly lies behind “steampunk”. It’s much more complex than that.

However, I’ll probably still pick the next installment. Eleanor as a character wasn’t of the wimpy kind, showed willpower and abilities to think and act for herself, and to uphold her decisions, no matter the outcome. The ending left me wanting to know what’s going to happen next.
